Routes:

GRANFONDO E MEDIOFONDO

The departure will be set at Tolmezzo (the Carnia chief town).
The first 15 km are predominantly flat, then 6 hilly km will bring us to Ampezzo. Here are the mountains. The climb towards the “Casera Razzo” saddle is very long (27 km) but crosses a wonderful varing landscape.
The initial part of the ascent has a moderate slope and is sweet among the woods of birch tree. Then the road runs suspended above the deep precipices of the stream Lumiei and a long series of galleries in slope will deprive us the sight of this wild environment. We will see the light of the sun when we will passing by the imposing dike of the Sauris lake. After one flat km along the lake shore, the slope will suddendly raise, even to 10%, as we will be crossing the two characteristic villages of “Sauris di sotto” and “Sauris di sopra”. Then 4 km almost flat will follow. This part of the route would be a good chance to rest and admire the beatiful landscape before the last 4 km. These are demanding, especially their final 400 m with a 15% average slope. But the panoramic sight of the “Dolomiti Pesarine” will make you understand that the first ascent is ended. We will find us in fact in Cadore at 1805m height.
Then will follow 26 km of descent along the Val Pesarina, with some parts of ruined asphalt. When we will arrive at the bridge on the Degano stream the two routes separate: to the left toward Comeglians the Mediofondo, to the right toward Ovaro the Granfondo. The Comeglians-Ravascletto ascent is not very difficult apart an intermediary part with a average slope near to 9%. The fast descent that it follows will bring us to Sutrio and, after 15 flat km, to the arrival at Tolmezzo.
For the braves who will choose the Granfondo route, just 2 km after the crossroutes, by the village of Ovaro, they will meet "the monster" Zoncolan (see the link for a full description).
For this terrible ascent we warmly recommend a 34x30 or triple with 27 remembering that many profs. have used 34x28 during the 2007 Giro d’Italia.
The first 4 Km of descent from the Zoncolan top are very steep and the road is very narrow: we recommend TO MAINTAIN A REDUCED SPEED IN PROXIMITY OF CURVES and HAIRPINS. After this dangerous part the road becomes larger and very enjoyable.
At Sutrio the two routes will be rejoined but to divide again just after 500 m. The Granfondo must still face the last ascent, Paluzza-Duron saddle. The beginning is easy and the slope will gradually raise up until the last 2 difficult km with their 10% avarage slope.
A technical descent of 5 km will bring us to the beatiful inhabited area of Paularo a village set in a verdant basin surrounded by austere mountains tops where tourist activity blooms, thanks to the landscape. The route will proceed by the Salino fall and passing in descent through picturesque little village. By Zuglio the two routes will meet again to end together the last 9 km at Tolmezzo.
